Crecimiento turístico y desigualdad socioecológica en el Caribe Mexicano

El crecimiento turístico en América Latina ha beneficiado a corporaciones internacionales, especuladores urbanísticos, pioneros turísticos, gobiernos e inmigrantes en busca de empleo. Sin embargo, existen serias dudas sobre las consecuencias socio-ecológicas del modelo dominante de turismo globalizado.  Esta investigación revisará las desigualdades socio-ecológicas generadas por el modelo de turismo global implementado en el Caribe Mexicano. El principal interrogante será: ¿cómo un modelo que exacerba las desigualdades sociales, a la vez que degrada el ambiente, ha podido ser hegemónico por más de 30 años y aún hoy se presenta como la única opción de desarrollo? Las desigualdades socio-ecológicas generadas por la penetración a escala local del turismo global serán analizadas en tres comunidades del Caribe Mexicano. Este análisis desvelará, en primer lugar, los medios por los que las personas tratan de posicionarse dentro de las estructuras de poder para ejercer control sobre otros y sobre el ambiente. En segundo lugar, las transformaciones personales de agentes individuales que tratan de liberarse de las estructuras de poder. Especial atención recibirán las interdependencias y mecanismos que conectan los impactos  locales con las dinámicas del turismo global, incluyendo las complicidades entre agentes globales y estructuras de gobierno "democráticas". La investigación se guiará por tres grandes temas presentes en los debates sobre desigualdad en América Latina: (1) la agravación de desigualdades socio-económicas a pesar de un crecimiento económico sostenido, (2) el reconocimiento de las diferentes formas que asumen las asimetrías de poder (culturales, étnicas, raciales, de género) y (3) la creciente relevancia de aspectos ambientales para entender las desigualdades sociales a escala global.
