My research project is conducted in the second phase of desiguALdades.net under Focal Study 4: Global Extractive Chains and Social Inequalities: Lithium Mining. It investigates the consequences of the global valorization of nature for social inequalities and efforts to remedy them. Extractive products such as minerals have driven much of the recent growth in many Latin American countries, but the contradictory versions of relations with nature involved in their extraction are of global dimensions. For example, lithium extraction tied to the vision of “green mobility” for the global elite is inextricably bound with the livelihoods of local rural populations. For them and for future generations as well, the extraction of lithium means a potentially irreversible loss of resources and ecosystems.
