№ 383/2011 from 12/05/2011
The challenges, successes, and different approaches to overcoming social inequalities in Latin American countries are the focus of a conference organized by the desiguALdades.net on December 8 and 9 at Freie Universität. The participants will address the issues of how cultural differences and social inequalities in Latin America are related and what new developments there have been since the democratization wave in the 1980s. The conference is public, and there is no charge. The conference language is English.
The speakers and participants include many well-known inequality researchers. Besides scholars from Freie Universität Berlin, the following are expected to attend: Andrew Canessa (University of Essex), Gioconda Herrera (FLACSO, Quito), Jan Hoffman French (University of Richmond), Juan Pablo Jimenez (UN Economic Comission on Latin America and the Caribbean), and Göran Therborn (University of Cambridge).
The network was founded in 2009 with the aim of contributing to the development of social science research on inequality. It is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in a program to support the development of area studies. The core institutions are the Latin America Institute (LAI) of Freie Universität Berlin and the Ibero-American Institute (IAI) of the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz (Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation). Additional cooperation partners are the German Development Institute (DIE) in Bonn and the German Institute of Global and Area Studies (GIGA) in Hamburg.
Researchers and institutions in Germany and the rest of Europe as well as North and Latin America are involved in desiguALdades.net. The network awards fellowships for doctoral and postdoctoral research as well as short-term research stays.
