Scientific knowledge, State and Political Inequalities. The Case of the National Comission of Agropecuarian Biotechnology and Biosafety Regulations in Transgenic Seeds in Argentina
The biotechnological agrarian model was installed when the productive structure in fields were modified. This model requires the creation of a biotechnological package, composed by genetically modified seeds (Genetically Modified Plants -GMP-), also known as transgenics, agrochemicals and direct sow.
In Argentina, the National Commission of Agricultural Biotechnology (CONABIA, in Spanish) was created in 1991; this state commission is in charge of the release of GMPs for research, production and commercialization and it has also been creating the national policies that regulates the safety of these transgenic seeds.
In this project I’m interested in analizing the institutional frames of the agrobusiness, the public policies of the Argentinian State, and the biosafety regulation. With this information I will understand, on one hend, the ways in which the unequal access to the natural resources crystallises in the political structures of State and, on the other, the way in which that inequalities reproduce and get deeper, specially when we see the distribution of risks and the ambiental costs.
